Geographic Information Systems and Mapping Laboratory Projects

One of the GIS & Mapping Lab's projects is the CiMapper, a web-based application which will include: an interactive map generation tool (CiMap), a metadata catalog, and a library of downloadable hardcopy map holdings. In CiMap, a virtual map server will allow users to explore multiple sets of data and the relationships between them for any given area of interest, be that biodiversity hotspot, conservation corridor, or country.

The purpose of CiMapper, from an information management perspective, is to provide a front end to CI's Spatial Data Warehouse (CISDW) which gives users open access to conservation information. GIS data and metadata is received from CI field offices and is checked into a common spatial data warehouse organized by subject area. Map able data may be located and analyzed by geographic location, by proximity, or by other attributes. The metadata (information about data) catalog provides not only information about what the data is and where it came from but also holds key words which enable users to search for data based on a variety of criteria.

The GIS & Mapping Lab also oversees the CABS map library, and maintains a growing collection of printed maps produced by CI and other agencies. This CABS library is a key reference resource in the CI organization.

Hotspots Revisited Available Online. Hotspots Revisited details the state of the earth's biodiversity hotspots. The book identifies 34 regions that cover only 2.3 percent of the Earth's surface but are home to 75 percent of the planet's most threatened species.
