Regional Analysis

CABS recognizes that biodiversity information is a key requirement for the success of any conservation initiative. Field research projects both require and produce enormous amounts of information that needs to be managed, analyzed, and presented in cost-effective ways. Over 80 percent of all conservation-related data have associated geographic attributes, and are most usefully analyzed in a geographic information system.

The GIS & Mapping Lab has a broad array of advanced hardware and software resources that serve as the backbone of its operations. By developing and using advanced tools for mapping and data analysis, the GIS and Mapping Lab allows researchers, policy makers, land-use planners, and local stakeholders to visually monitor and analyze ecological changes and human impacts in global biodiversity hotspots and tropical wilderness areas.

Maps in Publications

  • The Lab provides conservation mapping and database support for staff and researchers in all regions where CI has on-the-ground presence.
  • The Lab carries out special projects specifically for the Research and Development needs of CABS.

The GIS & Mapping Laboratory Conservation Mapping program of the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science is a multi-faceted entity with a wide range of available products and services. The preparation and creation of professional map products for a variety of uses and applications, the provision of guidance, advice and assistance to CI departmental mapmakers and GIS users, and the maintenance and support of the conservation database are all GIS & Mapping Lab responsibilities.
