SETTING PRIORITIES

In order to deliver outcomes in the most efficient fashion, it is necessary to prioritize among conservation targets. Conservation Synthesis is therefore engaged in research to develop the scientific underpinning and implementation of prioritization. In effect, this involves applying the concepts of irreplaceability and vulnerability developed in the global gap analysis to prioritizing between Key Biodiversity Areas within a given region or country. This work builds on Conservation International's history of implementing "conservation priority-setting workshops" to maximize the incorporation of available data and rigorous techniques into the establishment of conservation priorities. A key initiative here is the Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE), which aims to identify and conserve all sites worldwide holding the entire global population of one or more Critically Endangered or Endangered species. Conservation International is one of the numerous conservation organizations which are partners to AZE, with Conservation Synthesis representing the organization within the AZE structure. AZE sites are the tip of the iceberg in terms of sites of both high irreplaceability and high vulnerability, and their effective protection is indispensable to prevent a wave of species extinctions in the near future. For other Key Biodiversity Areas, priority will be determined based on their irreplaceability and vulnerability as well, while ensuring high complementarity among the priority sites and those already under effective protection.

This prioritization work is particularly important to inform decisions regarding resource allocation by Conservation International's conservation finance mechanisms. Conservation Synthesis helps put prioritization into practice by contributing to evaluation of projects for the Global Conservation Fund at Conservation International. In addition, the department supports prioritization within Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund "ecosystem profiles" and represents CI in the BP Conservation Programme.
