The herpetological working group mainly focused on the Amphibia for two reasons: first, it was the group with which they had the most experience, and second, for this particular taxa some areas of West Africa have been more intensively investigated. Furthermore, for many anuran species, ecological data was incomplete or missing. The group recognized that while many publications exist, complete data on reptile distribution and diversity in West Africa does not exist. In addition to their own field work and experience on amphibians within the region, the group also took into consideration a number of published references, as well as the Zoological Museum of University of Copenhagen WORLDMAP database.

The herpetological working group used the following criteria to identify and rank their priority areas:

  • Species Diversity
  • Species Endemism
  • Critical Habitats
  • Level of Scientific Understanding

Members of the herpetological working group: Mark-Oliver Rödel and Arne Schiøtz.
