The mammals working group had access to species lists
and distribution data for mainly the Rodentia and Chiroptera, but actual
locality records were inadequate for many species. To complement deficiencies
in locality-based records, and enhance a broader consensus on areas of
high diversity and local endemism across the region, several important
data sources were used to identify priority areas. The group also used
subjective assessments based on the knowledge and expertise of participants
to reinforce priotization within specific countries. For example, the
inclusion of additional coastal priority areas in Sierra Leone and Western
Liberia was driven by reports on rare species in this region. Parts of
Eastern Côte dIvoire and Western Ghana priority areas were
determined by the fragmented nature of forest elephant populations and
the need for corridors.
The mammals working group used the following criteria to
identify and rank their priority areas:
- Species Richness
- Species Endemism
- Rare and/or Endangered Species
- Critical Habitats
