The birds working group relied on a pre-workshop data compilation and analytical document prepared by Birdlife International as a framework for defining priority areas for birds. This document focused on the identification of Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in the Upper Guinean regions. The group did recognize limitations resulting from discontinuity and size of IBAs and included additional criteria to offset these limitations.

The Birds Working Group used the following criteria to identify priority areas:

  • Species endemism
  • Rare/endangered species
  • Critical sub-habitats

The group used several techniques including cluster analysis, selective criteria application and gap analysis to identify a total of eight priority areas. These areas were then prioritized in terms of biological importance, threat, scientific knowledge/research priorities and priorities for conservation action . The two highest priority areas were the Nimba highlands and the Tai complex.

Members of the birds working group: Pamela Beresford, Mary Gartshore, Lars Holbech, Koffi Hounkpe, Arnold Okoni-Williams, Erasmus Owusu, Hugo Rainey, Guy Rondeau, Hazell Thompson and Hilaire Beibro Yaokokore.
