CABS Research Shows Conservation can Often Coexist with Development
Research by Larry Gorenflo and Katrina Brandon of CABS’ Human Dimensions Program has shown that biodiversity conservation need not necessarily come at the expense of human development. In an article published in September's issue of Bioscience, Gorenflo and Brandon study the human context of priority locations for biodiversity conservation. They use human demographics, land cover, and agricultural potential to assess these locations’ suitability for conservation. Their results indicate that many locations examined are conducive to conservation, having limited human presence, large contiguous tracts of habitat compatible with conservation, and low agricultural potential. This research, notes the Editor of BioScience, provides useful perspective for conservation strategies in locations essential for maintaining global biodiversity.

Gorenflo’s and Brandon’s work builds on the global gap analysis, led by CABS researchers, that identified priority areas for conservation. Results of the global gap analysis were published in articles in Nature (578K PDF) and Bioscience (570K PDF) and were featured in a 2003 issue of AABS.
